A TEACHER'S DAY

Elementary School Highlights

Reading
Reading
Better With Friends

Using a mix of whole group and small group guided instruction reading at KIPP LA elementary schools is fundamental to all we do. Teachers create curriculum by pulling the best parts of many programs into one comprehensive plan that works for their students.

Writing
Writing
Perfect Practice

Much of our writing instruction is done in a writer's workshop model. We love Lucy Calkins and her work so we combine her principles with what we've learned over the years. The result ... our KIPPsters are great authors.

Math
Math
Divide and Conquer

With Common Core emphasizing conceptual understanding at a new and exciting level our math instruction combines writing, technology, traditional instruction, and small groups to engage students. As we say at KIPP, "Math is Life."

Blended Learning
Blended Learning
Tech Time

At KIPP LA, blended learning isn’t just a buzzword--it’s a philosophy. All of our schools infuse technology into the curriculum, allowing teachers to deliver more personalized attention to each student. Adaptive educational software enables students to learn at their own pace, helping them get further, faster.

Electives

Whole Child Approach

At KIPP we value the whole child and provide multiple elective classes so our students can find new passions and ways to express themselves. At the elementary level most schools have some combination of art, PE, music, and Spanish.

Middle School Highlights

Math
Math
Number Sense

KIPP LA math instruction emphasizes conceptual understanding and pushes students to be able to think and reason mathematically inside and outside of the math classroom. Students work in cooperative teams and participate in whole class discussions so that they have opportunities to explain their reasoning, try out new ideas, and receive feedback on their thinking.

Reading
Reading
Always Novel

KIPP LA teaches a close reading approach for ELA instruction. For every type of text, we begin with a simple read for comprehension and fluency. Because we spiral all the reading to include a comprehension level, all students, even those who are not reading at grade-level, can participate in higher-order thinking and develop a genuine love of reading literature.

Science
Science
Hands on Help

Each day, our students spend time experimenting, exploring, and developing their scientific vocabulary and communication skills. We use a small group, hands-on, design thinking approach for robotics. Each day, our students spend time learning to use tools, building their robot, and problem-solving unexpected situations that they encounter.

Humanities
Humanities
Write Stuff

Blending social studies and non-fiction studies our KIPP LA middle schools teach a humanities course to all students. Don't be surprised to find students writing from the perspective of a historical figure or group projects on the history of the community around the school.

PE
PE
Year Round Fun

Los Angeles is a city with fantastic weather and we take advantage of it with our PE classes. From basketball to flag football to soccer to many other sports, our PE curriculum teaches students healthy lifestyle choices and the tenets of sportsmanship.
